Though the fog has returned, for a few glorious days, the sun shone Downeast, including — miraculously, it felt — on the Fourth of July, so that Machias’ parade and fireworks went off without a hitch. If you missed them, you’re in luck, I recorded both. You can see the entire parade here and a sample of the fireworks here. Stopping at Pat’s Pizza last night, I was gratified to see that I’m not the only one sporting a ruby-red nose right now, and for me, at least, it’s the second burn in a month. Apparently, the rain has stilted my green beans and the part of my brain that remembers how to use sunblock. I told my children that though I am old enough to know better about sunburns, I was also much younger the last time I saw sunshine, which I thought was funny but prompted my 20-year-old to declare, “That’s a great old person joke.”
So that was nice. At least I acquired the burn in a pleasant way. On Thursday, I spent a few lovely hours sitting under sunny skies on Wild Wind Farm in Bucks Harbor, interviewing lifelong shepherd and sheep farmer Dave Craven about his recent trip to Scotland, where he served as a judge in the Golden Shears World Championships, the world sheep shearing championships. I’ll have that impressive story for you next week.
